Gemma Abrié releases her new album, Amalgama (Temps Record, 2016)
“Amalgama” is a jazz journey into Mediterranean and Atlantic music culture –from Brazil Catalonia, from France to the United States– where Gemma Abrié puts her voice at the service of the versatile Brazilian guitarist Munir Hossn, who has been travel companion of the Afro-Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, singer Mayra Andrade and Lusophone vocalist Gretchen Parlato American, among others. This project drinks from travel, meetings and the new knowledge of various musical traditions the singer has acquired during her career. Being rich in dynamics, warm and acoustic, “Amalgama” is a collection of original compositions by Abrié, Hossn themes and versions of recognized and varied artists like Joan Manuel Serrat and Javier Ruibal. This special slow-cooked artistic recipe tastes like jazz, fusion, Afro-Brasilian folk. But it also has a Mediterranean, folk and popular music flavor that reflects her personality thanks to jazz sound and phrasing, as African-American artists expressed their spirituality in singing. So this proposal includes songs in Catalan and Spanish to a repertoire that overlaps textures and colors of places and cultures that branded her life forever.
